Every day, nearly 37 lives are lost in the United States due to motor vehicle accidents caused by alcohol or other drugs, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Although impaired driving is a concern throughout the entire year, it becomes more prevalent in December. With many people on the roads to and from various festive celebrations, it is more important than ever to take the necessary steps to ensure everyone gets home safely.

In 2020, the NHTSA reported that 209 individuals in the United States lost their lives as a result of  alcohol-impaired motor vehicle accidents during the Christmas and New Year’s holidays alone. This alarming statistic highlights the need for heightened awareness and preventative measures.

This holiday season, each of us has the power to prevent a tragedy. Educate yourself and others on the risks of underage drinking and impaired driving. Make a commitment to driving sober, not just during the holidays, but all year long. Through a collective dedication to  prevention, we can continue to keep our communities safe.
